FAQS

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine in which fine needles are inserted into the skin at specific points on the body. It is used in the treatment of various physical and mental conditions.

WHAT TREATMENTS DO YOU OFFER?

As well as acupuncture, I offer moxibustion and cupping therapies.

Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials known as "moxa" are burned on or very near the surface of the skin. It can make acupuncture treatment more effective.

Cupping is therapy in which glass cups are applied to the skin creating suction. This can release tension.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM AN APPOINTMENT?

Your initial appointment will last up to 90 minutes. You will have an opportunity to share your reasons for coming to acupuncture and I will ask you about your health history. I will then give you your first treatment. The specific treatment offered will vary depending on you and your specific needs.

Subsequent appointments will last up to an hour.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Please wear loose and comfortable clothing as I will need to access your arms below the elbows and your legs below the knees. If I need to access another area of the body, in which case gowns will be available.

HOW MANY APPOINTMENTS WILL I NEED?

The number of appointments varies depending on your reason for coming to acupuncture and your overall health. Usually patients will have appointments once a week for several weeks. The frequency of appointments will then decrease over time.

WHAT DOES ACUPUNCTURE FEEL LIKE?

Generally acupuncture should not be painful It is normal to feel a mild tingle or dull ache whilst I adjust the needles but the needles are so fine that many people don't feel them being inserted. While the needles are in place, many people feel relaxed.

IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?

Yes. There have been a number of scientific papers assessing the safety of acupuncture. This research concluded that acupuncture is safe as long as it is delivered by a fully trained professional.

I am a qualified acupuncturist having completed a degree in acupuncture from The College of Integrated Chinese Medicine and I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE TO CANCEL MY APPOINTMENT?

I have a 48 hour cancellation policy. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are not able to make your appointment so that I can make the space available for somebody else.
